The objective of the road test is to test permit holders on their ability to operate a vehicle safely on the road and to demonstrate a proper understanding of NJ road laws. The road test can only be taken after the knowledge and vision tests have been successfully completed at a NJ driver testing center (some permit holders will be required to practice supervised driving for at least 3-6 months, depending on the age of the permit holder).
On the day of your road test, you will be accompanied by a Safety Specialist (Examiner) that will watch you drive on a off-road testing area or on a public road course. The test will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Learn more about the road test.
How to schedule a NJ road test?
Scheduling your NJ road test is very simple. Just refer to the New Jersey MVC Road Test Scheduling System page. On this webpage you will select "Road/Knowledge Testing Services" and then proceed to select "Auto Road Test".
Now you will be redirected to a page with a list of all NJ Road Testing centers. Select the one nearest you, If you live in Jersey City the nearest driving test locations are the Newark DMV or Lodi DMV.
After selecting your preferred DMV, date, and time you will asked to provide your driving license number and the permit validation number. The driving license number begins with first letter of your last name followed by 14 digits. The permit validation number is usually handwritten number made of 5 digits. Both of these number can be found on your NJ permit.
