Did today signal the end of Henderson's England career?
Getty Images
Jordan Henderson's inclusion in England squads and starting XIs has always been as a result of more than just his ability as a footballer.
Yes, in his prime, he was a very effective operator at club and international level, but it was his leadership that made him a player fit for the top level with Liverpool and England.
But now, it seems, those qualities no longer make up for his technical shortcomings.
The Athletic's Daniel Taylor pondered whether we have seen the last of the 33-year-old in an England shirt — check it out below.

The Athletic’s end-of-season awards, 2023-24: Men’s football

With the Premier League season complete and Europe’s other major leagues either finished or winding down, it is time to reflect on 2023-24.
Our team of writers, analysts and experts have been busy submitting their votes for The Athletic’s end-of-season awards. These cover the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga, and this year we also some have Europe-wide awards.
Let’s reveal the winners…
'Trent is too good not to play'
Getty Images
The goalkeeper and most of the back four picks itself, with Kieran Trippier (or Joe Gomez) a fine short-term option at left-back if Luke Shaw isn't fully fit.
Maybe, as a Crystal Palace fan, I'm biased, but I've also added Marc Guehi, a quick, agile and intelligent defender comfortable playing as a left-sided centre-back. He is the future of the England defence alongside John Stones.
But who to play alongside Declan Rice? A double pivot, possibly with an exciting youngster like Adam Wharton or Kobbie Mainoo, is tempting, but feels a bit too defensive against a stodgy Serbia side first up.
So I've picked Trent Alexander-Arnold, one of the most talented players in the country, who can ping passes from deep like a superstar NFL quarterback. The front four, with Jude Bellingham in his most dangerous position at No 10 and Phil Foden allowed freedom to roam from the left, picks itself.
My XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Walker, Stones, Guehi, Trippier; Alexander-Arnold, Rice; Saka, Bellingham, Foden; Kane.
'Kobbie Mainoo has been seriously impressive'
Getty Images
A very obvious first-choice back fours picks itself; Kieran Trippier fills in given Luke Shaw's lack of fitness.
Then a slight curveball in midfield. Kobbie Mainoo was seriously impressive in England's March friendly against Belgium and has been all season for Manchester United.
His inclusion allows England to take the handbrake off more offensively, and Jude Bellingham pushes into the No. 10 position he has excelled in for Real Madrid.
Phil Foden gets a bit of a free role, but starts on the left as he still does for Manchester City fairly regularly.
Cole Palmer has been excellent for Chelsea, but playing him out wide is sub-optimal and there are so many cautionary England tales about forcing square pegs into round holes.
My XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire, Trippier; Rice, Mainoo; Saka, Bellingham, Foden; Kane.

What did England's squad look like at the last Euros?
Getty Images
When Southgate names his final squad for this summer's Euros, it probably won't look too dissimilar to the one he named for the year-delayed Euro 2020 tournament.
The 26-man squad for that looked like this:
- Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson, Sam Johnstone, Jordan Pickford.
- Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Chilwell, Conor Coady, Reece James, Harry Maguire, Tyrone Mings, Luke Shaw, John Stones, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker.
- Midfielders: Jude Bellingham, Jordan Henderson, Mason Mount, Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice.
- Forwards: Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho, Raheem Sterling.
How England ended their penalty curse
From the Euro 1996 semi-finals to the start of the 2018 World Cup, the penalty record of the England men’s national team was famously messy. Five matches went to penalties, five were lost.
Penalties had become a weight around England’s neck. Their nemesis. Then, at the World Cup in Russia, they ended that terrible run, beating Colombia on penalties to reach the quarter-finals.
In this exclusive extract from Geir Jordet’s new book, Pressure: Lessons from the Psychology of the Penalty Shootout, we learn about an unsung hero who worked for 18 months to help make it possible…
The best XI of players missing out
You could name a pretty handy line-up made up of players who haven't made the England squad, so let me try to formulate an XI (assuming everyone were fit and healthy).
(4-3-3): Nick Pope; Reece James, Fikayo Tomori, Levi Colwill, Ben Chilwell; Harvey Elliott, Kalvin Phillips, Mason Mount; Noni Madueke, Dominic Solanke, Marcus Rashford.
A bench of Sam Johnstone, Tino Livramento, Trevoh Chalobah, Tyrick Mitchell, Rico Lewis, Lewis Hall, Archie Gray, Jordan Henderson, Morgan Rogers, Callum Wilson and Eddie Nketiah, too.

Police chief calls for fair treatment of England fans
England fans travelling to Germany for the men’s European Championship this summer should be “judged on their behaviour, not reputation”, says chief constable Mark Roberts, head of the UK Football Policing Unit.
Roberts, speaking at a briefing before the tournament urged German police — two representatives of whom were sitting alongside him — to not judge England fans on reputation, instead setting out a pattern of good behaviour at major tournaments.
He said: “We really try to make this point about England fans travelling abroad. The behaviour of England fans in tournaments has generally been excellent.
“When we deal with foreign authorities, (we say) please judge our fans on their behaviour, not on reputation. Candidly, there are countries in Europe with much more serious problems when it comes to football-related problems.
“I think we’re talking more Inbetweeners than Green Street,” he joked.
Inside the mind of Eberechi Eze: Faith, fun, and England
The Athletic
Eberechi Eze in full flow is a thrilling sight.
The 24-year-old does not so much run across the turf as glide, shimmying and ghosting past opposition defenders before they even realise he is there. Even in a league that can boast some of the finest talents in world football, it is a technique few can match.
But due to injuries across the last few season, it has been seen less frequently than fans and team-mates would have liked.
Now, however, Eze is smiling again. Click below for more.
'Cole Palmer has to play'
Getty Images
The debate over how to accommodate Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden is being overcomplicated in many quarters.
Both are world-class No 10s but Bellingham can be a world-class No 8 too. Play him him, with Declan Rice sitting deeper, and England can benefit from the strengths of both.
If we assume Luke Shaw will not be fit, at least for the opening game, the Kieran Trippier is the only option at left-back, while Marc Guehi is the least risky of several risky options to partner John Stones in central defence.
And on the back of the season he has had, Cole Palmer has to play and that left-sided attacking berth is the only slot left for him.
My XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Walker, Stones, Guehi, Trippier; Rice, Bellingham; Saka, Foden, Palmer; Kane.
The 'maybe next time' youngsters
In goal, Wigan's Sam Tickle might be in contention next time if he gets a move to a Championship club or similar, while Brentford's Matt Cox and Brighton's James Beadle - also in the Under 21s - are showing promise too.
In defence, Luton's Teden Mengi and Man City's Callum Doyle, who has impressed on loan at Leicester, are probably too raw and unproven. Full-backs Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento could catapult up the pecking order if they get more consistent game time at Newcastle next season.
Midfielders? From the Championship, Hayden Hackney and Archie Gray look good prospects, while Alex Scott and Carney Chukwuemeka need more consistent first-team action in the top-flight. Keep an eye on Liverpool's Tyler Morton too.
In attack, wingers Samuel Iling-Junior and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens have impressed abroad, while Jay Stansfield and Liam Delap (on loan from Premier League teams), plus Jaden Philogene and Jonathan Rowe, have done well in the Championship.
The explosive Morgan Rogers has settled in really nicely at Aston Villa, too.
Some real bolters for the next major tournament? How about Ashley Phillips, Bobby Clark, Lewis Miley, Omari Forson, Jobe Bellingham, Ethan Nwaneri, Jayden Danns or Amario Cozier-Duberry?

Portugal’s Euro 2024 squad: Nunes out, Neto in
Some news from outside England: Portugal have named their squad for the Euros, with Manchester City’s Matheus Nunes left out but Wolves midfielder Pedro Neto in.
Nine Premier League players are among the 26 called up by head coach Roberto Martinez, with Nunes arguably the most high-profile omission. He didn’t feature during qualification but was called up for Martinez’s most recent squad in March.
Neto returned from injury for Wolves’ final game of the season against Liverpool on Sunday, coming off the bench for 12 minutes. He had been sidelined since March with his second hamstring injury of the season, but shone when he was fit with nine assists and two goals from 20 league appearances.
Cristiano Ronaldo heads up the squad. He was dropped during the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 but Martinez restored him to the side and Ronaldo responded with 10 goals in qualifying. Read more below.
England’s Anthony Gordon is Newcastle's player of the season
Getty Images
Anthony Gordon can be content that his Newcastle career has come full circle. The last time Newcastle travelled to Brentford, in April 2023, Gordon shoved Eddie Howe, having been substituted as a substitute.
It was a heat-of-the-moment reaction from a player who was desperate to impress but struggling to establish himself in the starting XI, and it led Gordon to fear he had damaged his relationship with his new head coach.
Just 13 months on, as he is named in the 33-strong England training squad for the European Championship, Gordon’s mood, and standing, at Newcastle have been transformed.
After a necessary six-month adjustment period, Gordon has benefited immensely from Howe’s hands-on methods, while the head coach has benefited in turn from having such a supremely motivated and talented player. Here's how he turned things around.
Manchester City, Arsenal, and... Crystal Palace?
Surprisingly, Crystal Palace are up there with Man City and Arsenal as providing the joint-most players to the provisional England squad, with four.
Not sure many would have predicted that at the start of today! And to think, left-back Tyrick Mitchell could have easily been No 5...
An interesting stat from The Athletic's Will Jeanes: The team that provided the most players to England's squad at the Italia 90 World Cup was: Rangers.
The players were Gary Stevens, Terry Butcher, Chris Woods and Trevor Steven. Congrats if you guessed any of them.
