>> i'm kristen sze and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. lives at risk. that was the message from staff at an east san jose hospital as they walked with makeshift coffins to protest the closing of a trauma center in august. >> abc7 news south bay reporter zach fuentes has their warning favor and see dozens of doctors, nurses and their supporters marched with makeshift caskets for 15 minutes around regional medical center. >> they said it symbolizes the extended transport time to get trauma patients to valley medical center, the nearest trauma center. once rmxs closes, it can be life and death. >> and if valley is full, where it is going to go, going to go to stanford, which is about 33 minutes away. this every minute counts. >> thursday's march marks four months since staff say they got shocking news that the east san jose hospital trauma center would be closing in august, along with reductions to heart attack and comprehensive stroke programs. staff say the area is home to many low income residents, but the impacts would

be far reaching. >> residents of other areas of santa clara county, san benito, santa cruz and monterey counties. residents of the surrounding counties count on regional medical center. >> the hospital said that the closure and changes are due to a decline in utilization. in a statement, a spokesperson said in part the campaign against regional medical center chooses exaggeration to generate a false fear among members of the community we serve. the statement says the decision to close the trauma center affects less than 2% of patients treated daily, doctor gupta said. the impact is still major. >> even if you say one life will be lost per day, that's too much to handle. >> the hospital also said it has transition plans for its stemi and comprehensive stroke programs, and has added 20 more beds to its emergency department. the hospital staff has gotten support from santa clara county supervisor cindy chavez. >> we're asking the california department of health services to say no. we're asking the governor to lean in and say no, and we're asking our attorney general, rob bonta, to

investigate the corrupt practices of this corporation. >> the closure and changes at regional medical center are set to happen august 12th. staff and supporters plan to get thousands of signatures on a petition to bring to governor newsom in san jose. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> flight attendants who say they're working harder than ever post-pandemic, picketed at sfo today as part of a worldwide day of action. united or i should say, union flight attendants for american alaska and united all rallied outside 30 airports nationwide. they picketed to draw attention, including letting people know they don't get paid for the time. passenger spend boarding planes. >> surveillance video shows thieves ramming their car into a san leandro liquor store overnight, then breaking in. it happened at gourmet cellar off washington avenue, as abc seven news reporter lena howland uncovered. this was not the thieves only stop. >> this is the moment a car backed into san leandro's gourmet cellar liquor store.

three people were then caught on camera rummaging through the store. >> all i'm feeling the need to have a damage like that. the business is going to be closed for. >> i don't know how long, but less than a minute later it happened again. surveillance video from inside shows suspects repeatedly slamming into the store, getting further inside each time. tony singh has owned the store since 2016. >> been there going back and forth for few times for atm, but they're not able to get it. >> but it didn't end there. later thursday morning, san leandro police say the same car used in this incident was found less than five miles away in oakland. the car rammed through the gate of a marijuana dispensary called 420 market, though the suspects never got into their building. the dispensary owner said between 50 to $60,000 worth of damage was done to their fence and gate. >> it's getting harder and harder to do a business in in america. >> as for singh, he says while his building is insured, the

merchandise and other equipment inside are not. in san leandro. lena howland abc seven news. >> an arrest today in the attempted firebombing of a milpitas mcdonald's. investigators say the 46 year old suspect was seen firebombing the closed restaurant in ranch on ranch drive yesterday morning. damage is estimated at $150,000. >> police departments across the country regularly hold coffee with a cop events to foster relationships with the community. >> oakland's new police chief is bringing back this old strategy. abc seven news anchor anser hassan met in today's special event in the temescal district. my pleasure. i'd like to introduce our chief. >> i am here to have a coffee and just sit down and talk to all the community members. coffee with the cop in oakland included coffee with the new chief. i like my coffee black with with two sweetened lows in it. >> chief floyd mitchell held these kind of meet and greet events routinely at his two

previous chief jobs in texas, from home owners to business owners. he says it's a powerful way to build effective relationships. >> we cannot be in every place at all the time, so we rely on these relationships. so when we have incidents in our neighborhoods, we can talk that relationship is already built. >> shawn granberry, a lifelong oakland resident and business owner, says this was an opportunity to explain to the new chief the difference between old oakland and new oakland. >> old oakland will be someone like me that's been in the neighborhood for 30 plus years, so been here, know the community. the new oakland that just paid $1.3 million for their house. >> the way granberry describes it, the two oakland's don't get along and don't communicate that mistrust, he says, gets exploited. he says law enforcement needs to understand how to navigate through that. >> i know that those doing the bad things around here are manipulating the lack of communication between neighbors, between police. >> but remember, the crime didn't occur if it wasn't reported, officer says he

understands the frustration around complaints of delayed response times, but he says this was a chance to explain why underreporting is a big problem as well. >> for us to have our statistics together as well and how we navigate our resources. oakland resident manjhi mundle got to meet the beat officer for her neighborhood. she says she feels reassured after their talk. >> actually, having that conversation from a civilian officer perspective as to what the touch points are in my actual neighborhood, was really helpful. >> opd plans several more coffee with a cop in the coming months in oakland, anser hassan. abc seven news. >> governor newsom has more than doubled the number of california national guard service members deployed to crack down on fentanyl smuggling. the governor says the counter drug task force operations have been placed at key locations around the state, including ports of entry along the border. the number of deployed service members has increased from 155 to nearly 400. a major bust involving the

drug adderall, two top officials of a california based digital health company are under arrest russia and david brody of dung global incorporated, inc. are accused of running an adderall fraud scheme. the us justice department says they provide an easy online access to the adhd drug for people who had no documented medical need for it. authorities arrested brody in san rafael and ha in los angeles. attorney general merrick garland issued a statement saying those seeking to profit from addiction by illegally distributing controlled substances over the internet should know that they cannot hide their crimes, and the justice department will hold them accountable. a san jose restaurant owner was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in a covid relief payment fraud case. david tai loooooong pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining and misusing pandemic relief aid. loooooong admitted he received more than $5 million and that he unlawfully used 3.3

million. liang was accused of using the money to make car payments to a lexus dealership and on casino gambling, a water rate hike in the south bay was put up for public debate this afternoon. >> san jose water company is looking at raising water rates by 11% in 2025. advocacy groups and residents say the increase is well above the current inflation rate, which is just under 4. >> the question not just is water affordable, but are we doing what we can to minimize the inflation rate? and this this, this rate increase is absurd. giving the inflation rate. >> there is a second public forum tonight at 6 p.m. the changes could take effect on july 1st. it's estimated the average bill could go up by 10 to $11 per month. >> today marks the grand opening of oakland's newest affordable housing development, the ax cherry hill apartments adds 55

>> my policy has been canceled. i have one more week of coverage. >> michelle green has lived in grizzly peak in the berkeley hills for the past eight years. travelers insurance has opted not to renew her home insurance. >> i was told i lost my policy because i was in a high fire danger with wood siding. >> a lot of homeowners and business owners in california have struggled to find coverage because insurance companies have stopped writing new policies. california insurance commissioner ricardo lara just announced a new proposal it would require insurers use new catastrophe modeling to write more policies for people who live in high risk fire areas. insurers would use computer programs to estimate future risks when seeking price increases. in return, the state wants larger insurance companies to cover more properties in high fire risk areas at least 85% of properties in distressed areas, amy bach is an insurance consumer advocate. >> the commissioners most recent

announcement is part of his sustainable insurance strategy, and he's taking a carrot and a stick approach. he's saying insurers, you can have something you want, but you've got to give something back to consumers. so the hope is that this measure will lead to less challenges for consumers, more affordable, more available options. >> critics say that the catastrophe models are based on guesses on what might happen in the future. >> we know cap models can drive premiums up. premiums are already going up, commissioner lara says. >> he's trying to move forward and bring insurers back. he issued this statement saying, quote, we are enacting a major reform that will result in insurance companies writing more policies. so if you are stuck on the fair plan because of your unique wildfire risk, there will be help for you. as for michelle green, she says she'll take any help she can get. >> i'm hopeful that maybe this uh- proposal that the insurance

weather coming your way and father's day into monday. windy with fire concerns ahead. so let's first talk about the immediate future. fog near the coast of 5:00 this evening will advance a little bit, but it's not going to go very far this evening. you're looking at 6070 inland 50s coast side with the wind stirring up the atmosphere. we're really only expecting patches of fog tomorrow morning. 40s and 50s. early in the day. by noontime, you're seeing mostly sunny skies. and as we head into the afternoon hours, 70s and 80s inland 60s for most of you, along the coastline in the evening, it'll cool off nicely as well. your morning temperatures will be in the 40s and the 50s tomorrow afternoon. you're looking at upper 80s to low 90s in places like santa rosa. a lot of sun, 60 degrees in half moon bay. now, i do want to show you the fire weather watch that will be going up for parts of lake and solano counties this is 11 p.m. saturday until 5 p.m. monday. gusty winds lowering humidity is going to raise that fire. concern so the winds pick up

sunday afternoon evening 40 to 46 miles an hour along the coast. humidity levels will be fine, but it's really solano county that is a concern in lake county. those winds will remain gusty going into monday and that's why that fire weather concern, the accuweather seven day forecast a little bump up tomorrow. back down for father's day weekend. and we are talking about fire danger rising between father's day and monday. winds relax. and for juneteenth a little warm up coming your way. so kristen and dan looking nice for next week as summer begins a week from today. yeah, pretty nice for the dads. yeah. by the way, sandia did not give me insider information that she kept from all of you. she keeps it all out there for everybody. oh, it's for everyone. full disclosure. yeah >> all right. thanks, cindy. well, a capitola police are issuing a cliff hazard after a landslide just below park avenue in santa cruz county. the slide borders the city of capitola and new brighton state beach, a popular place for beachcombers during a low tide. police say the slide did not injure anyone.

>> this is kelsey, man. he is the man. the director of inside out two. and we're kind of in the inside out two hallway here at pixar. >> yes, this is our art of show that we have here at the studio and showcasing all the beautiful work that all of our art team and some of our story team have done for the movie. this near and dear to my heart. yeah, anxiety, miss anxiety. yes, yes. it all kind of started with her. >> i'm anxiety. where can i put my stuff? >> a new emotion? >> it was starting to be an issue in teenagers, especially teenage girls. and then the pandemic hit. and so we had already kind of landed on anxiety being kind of the main new emotion even before the pandemic. but even after we went through it, we just knew it was an important story to tell. >> so these movies take about four years to make. we cared deeply about authenticity when we tell our stories. and kelsey and i, if you've ever met us, you may notice that none of us were ever 13 year old girls. i did notice that. yeah. so we

thought this would be really helpful to see what teens right now think about the story we're telling and get their reaction to it so that we can make it as believable as possible. so we pick nine girls from around the country that we met with for a period of three years and showed them the movie every four months and got their notes and their feedback. we wanted believable relationships between riley and her friend group, and what she's going through emotionally. we wanted to make sure that felt truthful to them. >> we need new friends or will be totally alone in high school, out with the old, in with the new. >> we hope this movie gives everyone all the feels. it is got heart, it's got humor, but it's got a real emotional depth that we're proud of. and we want this to be meaningful to people and not just fun and entertaining. >> look, we all have a job to do. >> i plan, i want people to see this film and think differently about their emotions and of themselves and walk away and be able to look at themselves in the mirror and love what they see, both inside and out. >> pretty impressive. and a lot

fire department? while the suspect still works there? san francisco firefighter robert muhammad had a family crisis in july 2021. we won't discuss details out of respect for his privacy, but his colleagues were concerned about him. >> people offered to cook for him. people offered to work his shifts for free, and he rebuffed my offers. but i've never had a conflict with him prior to this. >> six months after that family crisis, firefighter gabriel shinn tells me, muhammad called to ask who in the firehouse was talking about his private business. >> robert, i said, i take i take ownership for speaking about that. and, you know, because we were concerned for you. but i'm not going to tell you who told me, and he said the next time he sees me, he's going to hurt me. he said that? yeah. well, i mean, he used he used a pejorative, but. yes. >> well, i'd like to know what he said. the next time i see you, i'm gonna you up. >> that's exactly what he said. >> court records show that two

days after that phone call, robert muhammad used a computer at station 25 to retrieve shinn's work schedule. and his home address and left the station with what's called a hydrant spanner, a heavy brass wrench measuring 15in that's used to turn the water on and off. muhammad drove across the bridge to shinn's home in oakland and found him out front, sweeping the sidewalk. >> i heard somebody say, are you going to tell me, are you going to tell me who told you? and i turned around. i said, robert, what are you doing here? he said, who are you protecting? i said, i forgot, and then he reached into his back pocket. he pulled out the large brass spanner and he started swinging at my head. >> a witness called 911 9-1-1 emergency buddy reporting. >> yes. my being beat with a wrench on ninth avenue and east 19th street. >> court records allege muhammad swung the wrench at shinn's head approximately 12 times, breaking his arms as he tried to protect himself, giving him a

concussion. one blow sent shinn's glasses across the street. he said. the attack stopped only after a neighbor who works against human trafficking pulled a handgun and confronted muhammad, and then he slowly dropped the spanner and looked backwards and walked away towards his car, which is approximately a block and a half away. robert muhammad has pleaded not guilty to felony assault with a deadly weapon, with several enhancements and one special allegation great bodily injury. his criminal defense attorney, jim bustamante, has declined to be interviewed about this case in the past. so i'm going to cover this in the future. i appreciate your time? and has not returned my phone calls and emails this week asking for a reaction to the gabriel shinn interview. in addition to the criminal case, shinn has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city and county of san francisco robert muhammad, chief janine nicholson, and other members of the san francisco fire department for battery, assault, race and color discrimination, disability discrimination, retaliation and more. shinn's

attorney, james torres, says robert muhammad never faced discipline and never missed a paycheck. >> you have an individual that the chief has allowed to continue working all this time, continue drawing taxpayer salary all this time, after attempting to murder a fellow firefighter reporter. >> the lawsuit also says several of shinn's direct supervisors ordered him to drop the charges and to not cooperate with the police investigation of the attack. >> the first person called me and said, hey, is there any way we can work this out? the second person called me and said, you can't charge him. you know you've got to drop the charges. that man's got a family and of course i was angry. i said, you know, he just tried to kill me. >> the lawsuit says they treated shinn with startling prejudice and muhammad with baffling favor from the outset, because they saw one difference shinn is asian and muhammad is black. in their answer, the defendants deny each and every allegation, still recovering from his injuries and ptsd, gabriel shinn

refused a fire department interrogation, which he believed would be not about the attack, but focused on who was talking about robert muhammad's family crisis. >> within days of that, chief nicholson and those deputies took away his pay. they took away his health insurance before he could even recover from those injuries. >> no response from chief nicholson and city attorney david chu's office emailed me that we will continue to respond to the complaint in court, the city attorney has arranged outside counsel for all those defendants. one other item from the federal court file san francisco police. >> hey, i've got a guy following me. i just stared into some legal documents, on treasure island. i wonder if you guys could help me out. he's a pretty. >> last year, a process server went to the fire department training center where robert muhammad now works. after he handed the firefighter a summons. brandon kleinman tells me he got into a high speed chase with muhammad. so he called 911 and it was raining

waymo issues a recall for its entire fleet of 672 driverless cars after one hit a telephone pole. the mountain view based company has already deployed mapping and software updates, so it won't affect current operations. waymo offers driverless taxi rides in san francisco, los angeles and phoenix. i mean, waymo hadn't had too many public issues. it was mainly cruise getting the

bad press. so this is does this concern you? what do you think? less likely to use one. >> lyanne, you've been in one of these, right? >> yeah, i have to say i've been in one and i really trust them. many times. more than a lot of drivers, especially my husband. but anyway, you know, they have so many different scenarios down. so again, very surprised that this happened. but again, i guess that your or that company is as good as their latest computer update. you know, i think that's a good point. >> what occurs to me is obviously we have to make sure these things are safe. they have to be fully tested and vetted. but there have only been a handful of incidents. and every single day there are any number of incidents involving real people driving cars, right? that's true. we don't flip out. so i think we have to have some balance and we don't report on them as much. >> true. that's true. >> all right. artificial intelligence could help you figure out how your pet is feeling at least that's the claim of an app called cats. me. university researchers used

thousands of photos of cats to train the app's ai to recognize when a cat is feeling pain. the developers say it is more than 95% accurate. i guess that's good, but sandia, to me it seems that pretty obvious when a cat is feeling pain. if it was my pet, you would know that with you don't need the app. >> yeah, but you know, dan, i'm thinking in terms of other pets. i mean, at least humans. kids they can tell you, hey, i'm not feeling well. this is what's wrong. animals can't really tell you, so maybe they'll expand to include other animals as well. >> oh, probably. i mean, i think leon cats certainly play it closer to the chest than dogs do . >> that's right. i would like to have one, though, for my dog. you know, sometimes i wonder, well, is she sad? is she mad at me? does she want to kill me? you know, but but i do have to say that, you know, i think cats hide things more. they're sneaking away mysterious. and they don't. they're they're they

have a20 series lead on edmonton, basically a must win game for the oilers tonight and we'll have it here on abc seven. the san jose sharks hope to get back into playoff contention soon, and today they hired a new head coach. it is assistant ryan warsofsky who is being elevated to head coach, taking over for david quinn, who was fired after team teal posted the worst record in the league this past season. warsofsky, 36 years old, becomes the youngest head coach in the nhl and before joining the sharks, warsofsky was a head coach in the american hockey league. we got game three of the stanley cup final. it's coming up literally in eight minutes here on abc seven. top of the hour. panthers center by the way alexander barkov is playing. he took a huge hit from leon draisaitl in game two. but he is okay. and then after the game stay with us for after the game. uh- aptly named. we'll have sharks defenseman henry thrun joining us to talk about the new head coach, plus warriors director of sports medicine and performance rick celebrini. his son macklin will likely be the
