Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay have met again, this time atop the leaderboard at the 2024 U.S. Open. Both tying the U.S. Open scoring record at Pinehurst No. 2 with matching 65s, they stand atop a star-studded group in contention heading into Round 2 of the national championship. McIlroy is set for a quick turnaround off Friday morning alongside the two most recent champions, Xander Schauffele and Scottie Scheffler; the latter two struggled Thursday but remain within touching distance.

U.S. Open debutant Ludvig Åberg navigated Pinehurst without any stress Thursday hitting every fairway y and connecting on 16 greens in regulation. Contending at the Masters in April, the young Swede will aim to do one spot better than his runner-up performance at Augusta National. Speaking of contending at majors this season, Bryson DeChambeau is at it again. The 2020 champion hopes his major acumen lasts the rest of the way and culminates in his second U.S. Open crown.

Rory posts second-round 72 to stand at 3 under for championship

2024 U.S. Open: Rory McIlroy stays disciplined, remains near top of leaderboard despite 72 in Round 2 Patrick McDonald

After a relatively stress-free 65 on Thursday -- his first bogey-free opening round at a major in a decade -- Rory McIlroy faced a fair share of adversity Friday in the second round of the 2024 U.S. Open. Without his best stuff for most of the day, the four-time major champion effectively navigated his way around Pinehurst No. 2 en route to a 2-over 72 to stand at 3 under through 36 holes.

McIlroy remains firmly in the championship conversation heading into the weekend sitting one shot back of the clubhouse lead midday Friday -- and two behind where he started the day…

Cantlay counters

Well, scratch that! Patrick Cantlay tacks on a birdie of his own on No. 6 to reach 6 under alongside Ludvig Aberg. Cantlay is looking very comfortable in this position and hasn't really missed a shot so far today. It will be interesting to see if these two can push the pace at all over these next 12 holes.

Ludvig takes solo lead

Ludvig Åberg is the first player to reach 6 under today thanks to a birdie on the par-5 5th. He is a perfect 5-for-5 hitting fairways today meaning he is now 19-for-19 in that department on the week. He is in cruise control.

Ludvig laughs off a chunk

This kid is unfazed. Ludvig legitimately chunks his approach into the par-4 4th, laughs it off with his caddie Joe Skovron and then pitches his third to 11 feet below the pin. He brushes in the par save to remain at 5 under alongside Patrick Cantlay and now heads to the par-5 5th.

Tiger finding his stride

Wow, wow, wow. Tiger Woods makes birdie on the par-4 4th from 16 feet to get into red figures on the day. That was a sick long iron into that green and he now heads to the par-5 5th with a chance to string a couple of them together. He is now 3 over and a couple inside the projected cutline of 5 over.

Ludvig leaps into a share of the lead

The debutant has added an early birdie to his second round and has pulled alongside Patrick Cantlay at 5 under. Ludvig rolls this one in from 30 feet on No. 2 and looks extremely comfortable around Pinehurst. Remember, he hit all 14 fairways and 16 greens yesterday.

Sergio!

How cool a story would this be if Sergio Garcia got himself in the weekend mix. He posted one of two bogey-free rounds on Thursday and starts his Friday with a birdie to reach 2 under. The 44-year-old got into the field as an alternate after going through qualifying.

Bryson birdies the last to post 69

The Bulk had a little bit of everything on Friday. Bryson posted five birdies, four bogeys and nine pars en route to his 1-under 69 and is the early second-round leader with Thomas Detry on the course at 5 under and Patrick Cantlay yet to tee off. His round today was a bit more stressful as he didn't quite have the tee ball in the same spot as yesterday, but he golfed his way around Pinehurst effectively and made plenty of putts along the way.

Rory cards second-round 72

After an opening 65, the 2011 champion backs it up with a 2-over 72. He was once again brilliant with the driver in hand hitting 12 of 14 fairways, but the sharpness with the irons was lacking. McIlroy cards three bogeys (including one on his final hole, the par-3 9th) and just one birdie. He comes in at the morning average and is still firmly in this conversation as Patrick Cantlay gets going later this afternoon.

Scheffler on cut watch

The world No. 1 stands at 5 over and in jeopardy of missing the weekend with three holes to play. He's got the par-4 7th and par-3 9th ahead of him which present birdie "chances" and they made be needed as the cutline jumps between 4 and 5 over.
